Calorimetry

What is calorimetry?

The science of measuring heat changes in chemical reactions. This measurement is done using a calorimeter which can be an elaborate set-up or a simple double-Styrofoam cup-thermometer set-up from inorganic lab.

What is heat capacity?

Heat capacity (C) is the ability of matter to store thermal energy and is measured in Joules/Kelvins (J/K).

What is specific heat capacity?

Heat capacity (C) is the heat capacity per unit mass and is measured in Joules/kilograms Kelvins (J/(kg $\cdot$ K)), i.e. the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of a substance by one Kelvin.

What is the specific heat capacity of water?

\begin{displaymath}
c_{water} = \frac{1 cal}{^{o}C \cdot g} = 4186 \ J/(kg \cdot K) = 4.186 \ kJ/(kg \cdot K)
\end{displaymath} (39.2)
