Physical and Chemical Properties

How do the physical and chemical properties of alkenes differ from those of alkanes?

Not much: alkenes follow the same rules as alkanes. Nevertheless, double bonds can cause kinking in alkenes, e.g. fatty acids, which can decrease their boiling points.

What is the infrared absorption of a C=C bond?

Table 43.1: Infrared absorption of C=C.
Bond Frequency ($cm^{-1}$)

C=C $\sim$1600
