Hydrolysis
- Hydrolysis of amides can occur when amides are heated either with an acid or a base:

Hofmann degradation of amides (aka Hofmann rearrangement)
- Amides with an unsubstituted nitrogen can react with chlorine or bromine in a base to produce an amine:
